British Bertie's Bar Lighting Design
Bertie's Bar is a whisky bar located in the former library of The Fife Arms Hotel, an 18th century 5-star motel. The Russell Sage's design concept was inspired by Queen Victoria's eldest son, King Edward VII (known as "Bertie"), a notoriously extravagant hedonist. There is no actual bar here, guests are invited to explore the wide range of whiskies that are like books on a shelf, with 365 whiskies, one for every day of the year.
The lighting was designed to beautifully illuminate the whisky bottle and cast a warm amber glow around the room and guests. The Hope Bar has the feel of an alchemist's store, with shelves filled with tincture libraries, creating a space that's eye-catching, engaging, and comfortable.
Whisky options include single malt Dalmore, priced at £700 a barrel, so the lighting design had to take into account both heat and UV light to eliminate the risk of deterioration of the premium spirits. Designers chose to use high quality LED strip lights with complete photometric data to demonstrate minimal UV emission between 100nm and 400nm wavelengths. Accurate amber tone color rendering is essential; and tested whisky bottle and shelf finishes with different color temperature light sources, a 2200K light source was selected for the best amber shine.
The lighting is quite simple this time, but the lighting effect is amazing. With the help of the color of the wine, the color of the wine bottle, and the foil of the wine cabinet, it is only necessary to press the dimmer VT-C351 to produce a charming light. Ambilight, a little universe of stars.
The lighting designers worked closely with the joinery to ensure that all integrated lighting was installed flawlessly and that any rearward heat generated by the LED lighting was adequately dissipated.
The bright amber theme runs through the backlit lighting of the bar's amber glass windows, adding continuity throughout the space. Beneath the bar's sofas and whiskey racks, subtle color-changing lights are used, emitting a rich reddish-orange color as night falls. The lighting on the cocktail table gives a dramatic feel, so the whiskey shimmers as it pours into the glass.
A custom whisky cellar with lockable shelves can store customers' own bottles. These feature miniature jewelry points to create focus and sparkle. Elsewhere in the bar, custom sconces made from antique corbels with crystal accents add interest. Designers have designed the lighting in these interiors to make the bottle shown above glow and the crystal below to shine even more. The attention to detail in the interior design is complemented by the lighting design, leaving no elements behind except for the soft mood-shifting lighting scene and the ultra-warm LED filament lamps in the decorative lights.
The project took three months to complete and "one of the most striking features of Bertie's interiors is the incredible lighting, designed to make the room always ebullient: dramatic, intimate and luxurious."
