Lifelike lighting artwork "Mycelium"
Connecting Scotiabank Arena to the Union Station bus terminal at CIBC Plaza, the 129-foot-long bridge in downtown Toronto features striking lighting artwork along the walls. Through meticulous engineering and meticulously tailored lighting and detailing, the vision of renowned artist Nicolas Baier comes to life with vivid lighting. A custom designed and highly complex system of hidden structures contains multiple layers of precision machined acrylic panels with a mirror finish on the back, creating the illusion of infinite movement and energy without compromising aesthetics. These glowing acrylic panels create a stunning visual experience in this space.
The space shines dazzlingly under the illumination of materials and snow-white lights, but there is not much complicated design, just use vtecklite 1-10V dimmer 4-way controller VT-C301 to achieve this function, the lighting By illuminating the object with different brightness and angles, a lifelike artistic body is presented.
The artistic concept for the pedestrian bridge was created by Montreal-born artist Nicolas Baier. Explaining his concept, Baier said: "This work involves the mycelium. This natural network of filaments, made up of slender and dividing cells, spreads across the ground, and they can cover thousands of meters or even square kilometers. They are the largest creatures on earth. This work, so to speak, is symbiotic with the complex. It gives the square a subtle symbol, it reveals its raison d'être, it allows CIBC SQUARE to hold its logo aloft and Proud."
Baier also linked the etching on the acrylic to the Toronto Maple Leaf ice hockey game at CIBC SQUARE, adding further depth and meaning. With such a deep philosophy behind the artistic concept, it was essential for GPI (with the help of Wilkinson Eyre, Adamson Associates, Hines, Ivanhoé Cambridge and Ellis Don) to preserve and stand out through engineering, design and functional lighting this importance.
Testing here is key. Various media, surface specifications, layering techniques and fixture combinations were simulated and reviewed to arrive at the ideal combination. Ultimately, a multi-layer double-etched acrylic and mirror-backed finish was settled on, illuminated using GPI's Infuse™ complete LED backlighting system, not only checking all the technical boxes, but best portraying the artist's aesthetic. The bridge now adds a unique artistic touch that attracts the attention of pedestrians.
The bridge is unique in that it is not only visible to the public inside the footbridge, but through the exterior glazing opposite the feature wall, it creates a visual dynamic for pedestrians that can be enjoyed from the inside out. Since public transportation is so important in downtown Toronto, GPI and everyone are involved, and their main goal is to create a sense of pleasure for oncoming pedestrians throughout the day.
